TOTLEY AC BOOK CLUB

October
Richard Bulmer

18 months ago we set up a Totley AC book club. It’s been great sharing experiences and thoughts after reading a variety of books. The idea is we discuss books with adventure and/or running as their theme. It’s a wide definition to give us chance to be creative in our choices.

We meet the second Wednesday of every other month. The next one is Wednesday, 9th December at Greystones at 8pm. We’ll be discussing Sophie Raworth’s latest book, Running On Air.

We decide at each catch up what book to read next and the variety of books have ranged from Booker Prize winner Orbital to the adventures through New Zealand in the book Pants of Perspective.

Some books have proved blockbusters for everyone, some less so but it’s great sharing what we think in a friendly and inclusive discussion.

So a few quotes from our readers.

“The regular book groups are a great chance to select and discuss books related to, but not restricted, to running. We meet in a friendly local pub and share our views and experiences around the book and for any who want to, can stay a bit later for a drink and chat. I have enjoyed all of the books and insightful discussions” Gillian Donohoe,

“I’ve really enjoyed the book club. It has been nice to do something different, I’m not an avid reader so it has got me into a good habit of reading. Ive enjoyed meeting in the pub and chatting about the intricacies of each book. I’ve also met some new faces from the club I hadn’t met before. It’s a friendly group and I’d recommend joining it. My favourite book so far has been Out of thin air by Micheal Crawley. It was fascinating learning about elite runners in Kenya and how they train.” Matt Burden.

“I have found several of the books discussed genuinely inspiring particularly the Lizzy Hawker story which has influenced me finally to tackle strength training” Alan Brock.

“Thanks for a really warm welcome to my first book club yesterday. We had a very interesting chat about the latest book with lots of ideas about the writing, the content, and ideas for future reads. Looking forward to the next one.” Melisa Saunders.

“I’ve loved the variety of books. My favourite book so far has been Helm by Sarah Hall. It’s atmospheric, full of beautiful landscapes and stories from the Neolithic age to the current time. It’s an evening that always energises me with some great chat.” Richard Bulmer.

The group varies between 4-8 people and there’s always room for one more.

Maybe see you in December or next year. You’re always welcome.
