The 5th congregation of the Challenge marked the midpoint of this year’s event and the concluding run before a 2-month summer hiatus, with many of the Totley massive planning to spread the good word overseas, with the bonus of the opportunity for a bit of warm weather training.
42 gluttons for punishment decided that Saturday morning at 9am would be the perfect time to run up ‘Heartbreak Hill’ 3 times (some even elected to complete additional ascents as part of their warm up/ cool down), no doubt inspired to do so by the quite beautiful surroundings of the Manor Fields Park, which continues to be a truly hidden gem.
Rather than mentioning the weather and notable pairings this month, I thought this might be an opportunity to look back over the first 5 challenges and share the current standings.
Participation and meeting as a club are the fundamental reasons for the challenge initiative, and so it’s fantastic to be able to report that 118 Totley runners have completed at least one of the runs this year.

We have an impressive 18 runners who have completed all 5 so far (Anne Hegarty, Caz Kay, Chris Day, Chris Heggs, Ian Bates, Jane Piggot, John Gorman, Liz Carthy, Liz Dally, Maggie Gorman, Mark Goodison, Martin Robbins, Mick Crookes, Rachel Sever, Rachel Wall, Rory Wall, Sharon O’Leary and Susie Wall) who are well on their way towards the minimum of 7 completed events to be in consideration for the dedication ‘not a cup’ trophies at the end of the year. (There are 49 Totlies who could still complete the required 7 events to qualify, are you one of them?)
This year, we changed the pairs drawing from gender based to an open approach.
For the more competitive amongst you, here are the top point scorers after 5 events.
Leading the way with a maximum of 10 points we have Caz Kay, Liz Carthy and Mick Crookes. Just behind with 9 points in the chasing pack we have Anne Hegarty, Chris Day, Chris Heggs, John Gorman, Liz Dally, Maggie Gorman and Rory Wall.
For the next event on the 14th of September, we return to the more familiar surroundings of Graves Park.
I hope to see you there.
