Introduction
The Exterminator is traditionally the fifth and last race of the annual Totley AC series of five races and the route is quite complicated with several route choices. It is recommended that make yourself familiar with the route before race day. The race is run over varied terrain including road, track and footpath through woodland, fields and open moorland, villages and hamlets. This is a challenging race with some great views (and some great climbs) and stunning scenery.

You are encouraged to come on foot, by bicycle or by bus if you can. The 97 bus to Totley from Sheffield High Street stops a five-minute walk from the start. Get off at the Cross Scythes pub on Baslow Road and walk down Hillfoot Road to Penny Lane.
Postcode for sat-nav: S17 3AZ. Limited off road parking is available and will be signposted on the day. Once the car park is full limited on road parking is available but please consider local residents and avoid parking across or opposite any drives or gateways, or damaging grass verges.
The race starts at 10:30 am prompt. On race day, the number collection process will open at 09:00 and close at 10:15
Given the length of race and time of year we also highly recommend carrying water. There will be two water stations on the course but we do not provide cups. Therefore, please also carry your own cup or bottle!
The race starts and finishes outside the Totley AC pavilion which is at the top of the field behind the Cricket Inn (SK301799). On race day limited showers and changing facilities are available.
Facilities

There will be parking available on Moss Road but it is best to assume you will not be able to park anywhere near the Pavillion. We cannot guarantee any parking on the cricket pitch (pending weather) so please make plans ahead of your journey to park elsewhere. If you arrive at the race and we are not able to park you on Moss Road or theCricket Pitch, you may have to park further away from the start which will take time. Please arrive with plenty of time to accommodate this. We will not delay the start.
Water – please bring own cup or bottle. Single use plastic cups are not provided for water.
Entries and Transfers
This race allows for pre entry and will also have entry on the day. Pre-entered runners should collect their numbers at the Totley AC pavilion from 9 am on the day of the race. Race Day
This race is held under FRA Rules and runners must familiarize themselves with and comply with the FRA Requirements for Runners 2020 (the “Runners’ Rules”).
It has a distance of approximately 17 miles, 26 km with a total climb of around 1,066 metres and is therefore an FRA category B Long (BL) race.
FRA Best Practice Kit is mandatory (Waterproof whole body cover (taped seams and attached hood) + hat + gloves + map + compass + whistle + emergency food).
Mandatory kit inspections will be performed on race day. A further check may be undertaken on completion of the race – anyone completing the race without the required kit will be disqualified and reported to the FRA.
Your race number must not be folded or cut down and, at the start, all checkpoints and the finish, must be clearly visible on your chest; failure to show your number at these points may lead to disqualification.
Entrants may not take dogs on the course
Some road crossings will be marshalled checkpoints but competitors are responsible for their own safety.
Retirement procedure
Runners wishing to retire from the race MUST inform Race Control and not just a marshal. They should either:
- Report to a checkpoint and then return directly to the finish to report to race control
OR - Report directly to race control at Totley AC Pavilion when retiring between checkpoints
OR - Telephone the Race Control Organiser (see numbers available on race day)
General Race Instructions
This is a category “B” Long Fell race. In addition to having the mandatory equipment as stated above, it is essential that all competitors realise the seriousness of the undertaking. We have been very fortunate in recent years with the weather but do not take this for granted. You must visit all the checkpoints in the prescribed order, punching your race number at the last two checkpoints. The route you choose for the entire course is up to you – but do not climb over walls or fences. There is over 4,000 feet’ of climb throughout the length of the race. The route is not marked but is partially marshalled.
There are three water stations but you should not be relying on them, as you should be aiming to get round the course carrying your own provisions. Navigational skills are therefore essential and experience of fell running is also desirable. You are responsible for providing your own map. There are 6 road crossings on the route some of which can be quite busy. Only 2 of these are near marshalled checkpoints.
There will be warning signs for motorists but it is your responsibility to ensure you cross the road safely. Traffic will not be stopped for you.
There may be cattle and other livestock on sections of the course. Please treat them with respect, and caution, especially if there are cows with calves.

There will be a prize giving ceremony at the Cricket Inn. So head there for a well-deserved drink after your race.
